All major coating manufacturers specify ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 (near-white metal blast cleaning) as the minimum surface preparation standard for structural steel. Sa 2.5 removes all mill scale, rust and contamination and creates a 40–70 micron anchor profile for coating adhesion. Applying coatings over inadequately prepared steel will cause premature failure and void the coating warranty.
