Shot blasting achieves three things simultaneously: complete rust removal, removal of mill scale and contamination, and creation of an anchor profile for coating adhesion. No other method achieves all three. ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 is specified by all major coating manufacturers — Jotun, Hempel, International Paint, Sherwin-Williams — as the minimum standard for structural steel.

ISO 8501-1 Rust Grades and Blast Standards

Steel is classified by rust grade (A–D) before blasting: Grade A (mill scale intact, no visible rust), Grade B (mill scale with some rust), Grade C (all mill scale rusted away, light pitting), Grade D (heavy pitting and rust). Sa 2.5 is achievable on all rust grades. Grade D steel may require additional passes and more abrasive.
