How Concrete Floor Shot Blasting Works

A self-contained shot blasting machine propels steel shot at high velocity against the concrete surface. CSP Profiles: Choosing the Right Surface Texture

The ICRI defines Concrete Surface Profiles (CSP) from 1 (smooth) to 10 (very rough). For most epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings, CSP 3–4 is specified. Thin coatings (self-levelling epoxy) typically require CSP 2–3. Heavy-duty coatings and overlays require CSP 4–6.

Shot Blasting vs Grinding for Concrete Floors

• Consistency — shot blasting produces a uniform profile across the entire floor without directional marks.

• Contamination — shot blasting removes oil, grease and chemical contamination from the surface. Grinding can spread contamination.
• Edges and corners — grinding is better for edges, columns and tight corners where the shot blasting machine cannot reach.
